Live in large apartment communities in the South Eastern United States means that waste can build up easily in stairwells and outside apartment doors especially during the summer months. Not only as a travel hazard, but also are breeding grounds for vermin such as rats and rodents. I'm originally from London, England where there is a saying that wherever you are in London you're never more than 20 meters from a rat!
That's quite a shocking statement, but I'll bet the same goes for the center of the metro Atlanta community as well. This is where I currently live with moved across the pond a few years ago to life in the new world. If I ever thought that insects and rodents were big back home, nothing could have prepared me for the insects and rodents that in my first year saw just outside of Atlanta!
There are several things you can do as a caring member of your community complex to ensure that the rats are kept at bay, and most of the valuable advice is based on prevention. First, get educated. Read about what attracts rodents in your apartment. Most of the advice is good common sense, such as ensuring that you do not leave waste in the stairwells. You should contact your apartment manager who clearly labeled posters which let the community know when waste is collected, so they will not get built.
Ensure that maintenance personnel are aware of any cracks in your house walls and in particular the gaps in brickwork in the kitchen looking like the smell of food will attract vermin and rats in your house. Leaving food out on counters at night can also attract rats and mice. We live in an age of fast food and pizza delivery to our homes and cardboard containers are a common sight in most waste on our streets.
In days of old, could use a household cat to rats at bay but now days most cats as mine are indoor cats and would probably either run a mile or even if they caught a rat, would not know what to do with it. In fact, pets are in more danger by coming into contact with rats due to disease and bugs such as fleas and rats carry bacteria.
