Lead toxicity and lead poisoning is medically known as Plumbism, and refers to poisoning by ingestion or inhalation of products containing lead. When lead-based paint on the walls are fine, but if disturbed, causing dust and chips of paint on the floor, this is where the problem starts. Dogs will swallow pieces in particular paint - especially puppies. The substance of the moving and scraping the paint settles into the pet's fur and between his toes and is inhaled through his nose. This is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning in dogs, when a house is renovated or repainted.

Paint for 1977 contained high levels of lead and some companies today are still produced using this paint on children and pet products. Although the Consumer Product Safety Commission monitors the safety of all toys for man and forcing a federal standard for lead in paint for toys, there is not an organization that regular testing of pet toys, nor is there a standard for lead in toys pet. So pet owners must be vigilant to ensure that their pets are out of Harms way when renovating their homes. It's not just paint, which can cause poisoning in dogs or other pets.

5. Car parts like batteries, wheel weights, leaded gasoline and waste oil from cars with leaded gasoline

6. Building materials such as solder, putty and caulking

7. Plumbing and roofing

Puppies are more likely to result in materials due to their chewing, playful nature and their need to swallow just about anything.

Dogs are more likely than cats to eat lead-based items and larger quantities of lead include younger animals than older animals. In pregnant animals, the babies are affected, as lead crosses the placenta and is excreted in the milk of the mother, causing the fetus to be done.
